Memorial Day is in our rearview mirror, which means it’s officially summer! I’ve been thinking about how last year we didn’t really “get” a summer — no relaxing beach vacations or poolside playdates. This summer I want to catch up on what I missed and lean into the season — so I’m getting ready with my summer essentials to keep it simple, breezy, and effortless.
My Everyday SPF
Paula’s Choice Essential Glow Moisturizer SPF 30 is my everyday SPF— it’s moisturizing, blends well, is slightly tinted, and even includes anti-aging ingredients. I don’t spend a ton on beauty products, because I don’t believe in a lot of the hype. What I like about Paula’s Choice is that they try to be evidenced-based by citing relevant articles that support the products’ claims. This product is a physical SPF, which means it uses mineral sunscreen ingredients (like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide), rather than chemical sunscreen ingredients. I start every day with this moisturizing sunscreen, and it protects my skin while giving me a subtle glow. Perfect for a “no-makeup” look!
The Perfect Walking Sneaker
I feel busier than ever so I’ve been trying to get out more on walking and hiking trails to recharge. My family and I live within walking distance of a huge network of redwood trails in the bay area, and it’s my favorite way to get outside, get exercise, and immerse myself in nature. Danner Trail 2650 Leather Sneakers are my constant companion — they’re very well-made, breathable, and comfortable for long walks and hikes. I love the Summer Wheat style: they’re natural looking, but with energetic pops of color. The Danner Trail walking shoes are weatherproof and lightweight, making them easy to throw in my bag and go.
Shades for Every Occasion
Sunglasses are my favorite statement item, and for this summer, I’ve been on the hunt for a chic brand. I stumbled upon Orgreen Optics, a brand inspired by Japanese craftsmanship with thoughtful designs. Their frames are made by artisans and sourced from the highest-quality materials available. The frames themselves are simple and elegant, with refined touches that set them apart. My current favorite is the Lowlita in 1005 — I love that the shape feels vintage and mod at the same time. I have another pair currently in my cart: The Mies 854, which is cool and structural.
For summer, there’s nothing chicer (or more necessary) than a wide-brimmed? hat. I love the San Diego Hat Company Ultrabraid XL Brim Floppy Hat in the Toast shade — I get compliments on it all the time and I love how fashion-forward the super-wide brim is. This is a crucial part of my sun safety, too: the hat easily covers my face, neck, and decolletage. Bonus: It’s perfect for anyone with a larger head who has trouble finding hats that fit — it’s a little roomy, but it’s adjustable, so you can alter the width for your best fit.
Effortless Midi + Maxi Dresses
A versatile midi or maxi dress is my go-to for any summery occasion — I love having a summer capsule collection so I don’t have to think too hard about putting together a look. Plus, if you’re leaving work, it’s easy to pack just one garment to change into. This summer I’m stocking up on a few dresses:
Chic, Comfy Swimwear
My all-time favorite swimsuit is Solid & Striped’s The Claudia in black — it’s flattering and comfortable with super-modern cutouts. I’ve also been flirting with Mara Hoffman’s Kia One Piece, I love the triangle-shaped top and high-waist brief style.
That’s it, all my summer must-haves. I’d love to hear what’s in your summer collection — share your favorites below!
